JCPenney — Building Occupancy Status (BOS) Mode.

Operate the Building Occupancy Status (BOS) Mode — formerly the Last Man Out switch — so HVAC, lighting, and alarm systems respond consistently to ADT-panel occupancy state.

Action plan
(1) Continuously monitor the ADT-panel contact via the EMS. (2) When BOS activates, override the current schedule and set HVAC + lighting to unoccupied mode regardless of TOD. (3) When BOS returns to occupied, return HVAC + lighting to their TOD / PMT schedules. (4) On Fire or Intrusion alarms, keep all interior lighting ON regardless of BOS position. (5) If BOS Disable is used, log it and create a follow-up to revert.

Purpose

Define how Building Occupancy Status (BOS) Mode operates and how it affects HVAC, lighting, and alarm systems, to ensure proper operation and energy efficiency.

Scope

Personnel responsible for management and monitoring of building systems (HVAC and lighting) using the BOS Mode on the EMS panel.

Procedure

Monitor ADT Panel for BOS Activation
  • The EMS continuously monitors the contact on the ADT Panel.
  • When BOS activates, the EMS overrides the schedule and sets HVAC + lighting to unoccupied mode regardless of TOD.
Return to Occupied Mode
  • When BOS is set to the occupied position, HVAC and lighting return to their TOD / PMT schedules.
Impact of Fire and Intrusion Alarms
  • Fire and Intrusion alarms force all interior lighting ON regardless of the current BOS position.
Unoccupied Heat/Cool and Freeze Protect
  • BOS Mode does not affect Unoccupied Heat/Cool or Freeze Protect — those continue to operate per their own settings.
BOS Active Binary Input Point (BIP)
  • The EMS exposes a binary input point labeled BOS Active for remote and local monitoring.
Disabling BOS Mode
  • A BOS Disable software point allows remote operators to temporarily disable BOS functionality.
  • Any disable must have a follow-up created to revert it.

Quality assurance

  • Confirm BOS Active BIP reflects the actual ADT-panel state.
  • Confirm fire / intrusion alarms still force interior lighting ON during BOS activation.
  • Confirm any BOS Disable usage has a follow-up ticket to revert.

Troubleshooting

BOS Mode not triggering HVAC or lighting to unoccupied mode.
Solution. Verify the ADT-panel contact is correctly connected and activated; check EMS programming to ensure it is configured to respond to BOS activation.
Lighting not turning on during Fire or Intrusion alarms.
Solution. Ensure EMS programming prioritizes lighting control during alarms regardless of BOS position; test the alarm system to verify lighting activation.

Documentation & reporting

  • Record the status of BOS using the BOS Active binary input point.
  • Log any changes to BOS Disable and create a follow-up to revert.
